Fieldtrips - Summer 2005.
I currently have no trips scheduled because of
other plans. There are Monterey Seabirds Pelagics
Trips happening this summer, and Cheesemans
Ecology Safaris has a Monterey Bay Pelagic trip in September.
BirdNutz features birding with Les Chibana. For
those of you wanting to avoid weekend crowds, there are some midweek
trips (dates noted in blue).
For those of you who may not want to, or cant, spend a long
time out in the field, there are shorter trips
(trip names in orange), usually
running around 4 hours and usually in the morning. If you have
friends whom you would like to introduce to birding, the shorter
trips are the perfect way to get them to wade in without becoming
overwhelmed. To see a description of the trip, click on the trip
name. I will be adding more trips in the near future.
Whole Access Trips (W/A)
Whole Access trips are structured for disabled birders
and other people who have mobility issues. This means that the
trails or paths are level and have an even surface for wheelchair
and scooter access, as well as easy walking. Benches may not always
be available, so it will help if you can bring your own portable
seating. I also try to confirm that there are "whole access"
restroom/porta-potty facilities available. I will be adding these
half-day W/A trips to the schedule. If you would like to schedule
these trips with me, please do get in touch. Click on the pigeon
at the lower left corner of this page to send me a message.
Please tell your friends, birders, non-birders and
beginners alike, about these fieldtrips. Especially, the half-day
trips.
Cost
Most half-day trips are $25 per person and full-day
trips are $40 per person. Pricing may be subject to change on
future trips. I am not paid to guide on the Monterey Seabirds
or the Cheesemans' Ecology Safaris pelagic trips. To sign up for
these trips, you will need to get in touch with the respective
organizations.
Trip Schedule
None at this time. If I do have an opportunity to
schedule a trip, I will put the information here. If you would
like to be notified of a future trip, click on the pigeon at the
lower left and send me a message.
Monterey Seabirds Pelagic Trips - experiencing
the rich sealife of the Monterey Bay Area
These trips are organized by Monterey Bay Whale
Watch. Longer than their typical whalewatching trips, the focus
is on finding seabird species. Marine mammals are also sought.
The trip starts at 7:30a and returns to the dock by 3:00p. These
trips are the best values for pelagic birding on the central coast.
6/12/05, 8/14/05, 8/26/05, 9/2/05, 9/17/05, 9/25/05, 10/2/05,
10/8/05, 10/16/05.
There are two extended, 12-hour trips (5:30a to
5:30p). These trips go out to the area known as the Albacore Grounds;
the skipper will find the edge of the cold water current to find
the most abundant birding. 8/28/05, 9/18/05.
To sign up for these trips, go to their website,
Monterey
Seabirds. I am just one of the leaders on these trips. Other
leaders on the trips often include Don Roberson, famed Monterey
area birder and author; Dan Singer, a veteran seabirder and California
Birds Record Committe member; Todd Easterla, pelagic birder extraordinaire;
Roger Wolfe, avid pelagic birder and trip leader; and best of
all, the top birding skipper on the west coast, Richard Ternullo.
These are all very nice people to be with out on Monterey Bay
in search of great birds and marine mammals.
Don't let seasickness prevent you from enjoying
a pelagic trip!
I have a couple of non-medicinal, active anti-seasickness
devices that seem to work! These are not the passive elastic wrist
bands. These devices have stopped seasickness in several people
who were already ill. I will rent these out to you for a nominal
cost (to help defray my costs) so that you can enjoy the albatrosses,
shearwaters, whales and dolphins without having something in your
stomach on your mind!
Cheesemans' Ecology Safaris Pelagic Trip - experiencing
the rich sealife of the Monterey Bay Area
This trip is organized by Cheesemans' Ecology Safaris,
of Cupertino CA. This trip focuses on all marine life found in
the Monterey Bay Area. Led by the inimitable Doug Cheeseman, oodles
of biological information is disseminated in the most enjoyable
manner. Gail Cheeseman focuses on birds, and their son, Ted, on
other marine life. The trip starts at 8:00a and returns to the
dock by 4:00p. 9/25/05.
To sign up for these trips, go to their website,
Cheesemans'
Ecology Safaris, or call them at 800-527-5330 or 408-741-5330.
Once again, I am just one of the leaders on this trip. Other leaders
on this trip often include Jim Danzenbaker, extraordinary and
well-traveled birder; and Alan Royer, seasoned seabirder, elementary
school teacher, bird bander and trip leader for young birders.
