Bird Photos: Rarities: Scissor-tailed Flycatcher

This state bird of Oklahoma, the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, is quite a sight with its long, graceful tail streamers. I photographed this individual on 7/22/01 in the fields at the entrance to the Long Marine Laboratory in Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz County, CA.

The tail streamers on this individual is not as long as on an adult male and probably longer than on an adult female. A young bird has a shorter tail than an adult. I think this may have been a young male, but this is pure conjecture.

The tail streamers don't appear to be very long in this image, probably due to some foreshortening because of the angle. Also, this angle of view presents a wider appearance which may affect the impression of length.

The coloration of the underwing lining is visible in this image. This color is usually described as "pinkish", but this appeas more rusty. I'm not sure if this is indicative of a specific age or sex. Also, the pattern of white in the tail feathers is visible.
