Bird Photos: Rarities: Ruff
New Chicago Marsh, Alviso, Santa Clara County, CA

This juvenile Ruff was found by Michael Wienholt on about 9/24/03. There had been a female Ruff (Reeve) seen in the same general area a month and a half earlier, as well as in the previous year.

Juvenile Ruff

I took these photos on 9/26/03. Note the dull leg coloration; the cleanly edged coverts, scapulars and tertials. The large body proportions and hefty bill may be good features for a male.

Note the dark centered wing coverts with the prominent white edging. Also note that the scapulars are not covering the coverts in this image as they are in the previous image. Its crown is flatter than the Reeve in the photographs below.

This Reeve (female Ruff) was photographed on 1/20/01 near the Dumbarton Bridge toll plaza, Newark, Alameda Co., CA. It is more delicate looking than the juvenile Ruff, above, with its thinner bill and rounder head.

This image shows the other side of the same bird.

Here is a size comparison with a Willet. Where are those dowitchers when you need them?
