Bird Photos: Oddities: Albinistic Red-tailed Hawk at Turlock Lake

I photographed this bird at Turlock Lake, Stanislaus Co., CA on 2/25/05. The rangers in the area say that there is more than one Red-tailed Hawk with this plumage that have been in the area for several years.

At first glance when perched, this Red-tailed Hawk appears entirely white. But the face and throat have a mottled brown plumage, and some dark spots are visible on the belly. When it flies, many dark flight feathers become apparent. And the tail seems to be normally reddish brown.

The upperwings and tail are visible in the image to the right. The dark flight feathers are fairly dark. This individual was associating with a typically-plumaged Red-tailed Hawk.
