Bird Photos: Escapees: Nutmeg Mannikin
This bird was photographed by Linda Barrett at
the Water District Recharge Ponds near Lake Almaden, San Jose,
Santa Clara County, CA. Gordon Barrett, her husband, posted a
note about it to the South Bay Birds List on 3/10/05. These birds
have been present in this general area since at least 10/22/97.
They have been seen in other South San Francisco Bay locations
since 1994.

The Nutmeg Mannikin is an
escapee or cage-released bird whose origins are the grasslands
of South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Malay Archipelago.
The Nutmeg Mannikin may have the most alternate
English names of any other species of bird. It has also
been referred to as Ricebird, Spice Finch, Scaly-breasted
Munia, and Spotted Munia.
