Butterfly Photos

I try to capture butterfly photos when the opportunity presents itself. This means when a butterfly happens to distract me from birding and bird photography, and it actually sits there giving me a chance to set up and shoot. I'm still very much a novice at identifying butterflies and their plant relationships. So, if you disagree with the name I've put to the following butterflies photos, please send me a note to explain. I'd like to learn something new. Please do not copy any image without first asking for permission. All photos © 2003 Les Chibana.

Alaska - June 1 through 23, 2003

In 2003, I co-led a birding, wildflowers and (other) wildlife trip to Alaska for the Sierra Club Outings program for the second time. The primary leaders of this trip, Carol and Howard Dienger, have been leading this trip for six years and, along with co-leader Kay Partelow, they have honed it to an exceedingly wonderful Alaskan experience. This time, I paid attention to butterflies. I managed to photograph a handful of them, as well as some moths.

Yuba Pass, Sierra County, CA - June 27 through 29, 2003

These are some of the butterfly sightings made during my BirdNutz trip to the Yuba Pass area this summer. The group shots were taken near Bassett's Station within a few feet of the North Yuba River. It's been suggested that they were drinking, but there was no puddle of water visible. Could they have been acquiring some minerals?

Greenhorn Mountains, Kern or Tulare County, CA - August 2, 2003

I was in search of hummingbirds attending natural nectar resources in these mountains of the southern Sierra Nevada. Alison Sheehey and I came upon a patch of Monks-hood flowers, the first I had ever seen. A small creature flew in and began to work the flower patch. I was surprised to see that it was a Sphinx Moth!
