Butterflies: Yuba Pass, Sierra County, CA -
June 27 through 29, 2003
I'm still a novice at identifying butterflies and
their plant relationships. So, if you disagree with the name I've
put to the following butterflies photos, please
send me a note to explain. I'd like to learn something new.

These are some of the butterfly sightings made during
my BirdNutz trip to the Yuba Pass area this summer. The group
shots were taken near Bassett's Station within a few feet of the
North Yuba River. It's been suggested that they were drinking,
but there was no puddle of water visible. Could they have been
acquiring some minerals?
Lorquin's Admiral and Spring Azures? (Limenitis
lorquini and Celastrina ladon?)

As you can see, there wasn't
any puddle of water despite the proximity of the river, a
couple of feet to the right. Any ideas what a mixed group
of butterflies were doing on the ground in clusters? |

Is this a California Crescent
(Phyciodes orseis) on some kind of clover?

Same as the one to the left, but this
is what it looks like when I'm not wearing my contact lenses.
This poor image is still useful!
