Bird Photos: Rarities: Harris's Sparrow, Stanislaus County

This Harris's Sparrow was found by Harold and Sherrie Reeve on 1/29/05 at the edge of the San Joaquin River National Wildlfe Refuge. As I understand, this was the Patagonia Picnic Table Effect in action again, while the main attraction was the presence of a Barnacle Goose on this preserve. This central North American cousin of the White-crowned, Golden-crowned, and White-throated sparrows, occurs more infrequently than the other Zonotrichia sparrows in our area.

I photographed this bird on 2/25/05. As with many other reports, it was surprisingly easy to locate. And it was not camera-shy. It appeared a bit larger than the White-crowned Sparrows that were abundant in this spot.

The pink bill, white throat, "black touring cap and tie" set this bird apart from its cohorts. It also gave a robust call that was unlike our two common Zonotrichia sparrows.
