Bird Photos: Rarities: Chestnut-sided Warbler at
Mendoza Ranch
Point Reyes National Seashore, Marin County,
CA
This Chestnut-sided Warbler was reported to the
Northern California BirdBox by Joe Morlan on 10/1/04 at the Mendoza
(B) Ranch, Point Reyes National Seashore. It seemed to maintain
fairly close company with a Blue-headed
Vireo that was also present. This eastern species has become
a fairly regular, although rare, fall vagrant.

While leading my Palo Alto Baylands birding
class to the outer Point Reyes on 10/2/04, we were alerted
to the presence of this Chestnut-sided Warbler, which was
apparently found the previous day. The unusual chartreuse
upperparts with complete eye-ring, and pale gray face and
flanks makes this bird readily identifiable.

| As with many of the vagrant Chestnut-sided
Warblers that pass along the West Coast, this bird lacked
any obvious chestnut-colored feathering on its flanks, indicating
a young bird in its first winter plumage and probably a
female. The prominent, double wingbars with a yellowish
cast are also a good mark for a young bird of this species. |
