Bird Photos: Rarities: Canada Warbler at Mendoza Ranch
Point Reyes National Seashore, Marin County, CA

This Canada Warbler was reported along with the Blue-headed Vireo on 10/2/04 at the Mendoza (B) Ranch, Point Reyes National Seashore. I don't know who originally discovered this bird. This very attractive eastern vagrant is in the same genus as Wilson's and Hooded warblers, Wilsonia. Its breeding range extends from the southeastern corner of the Yukon Territory and the northeastern corner of British Columbia east through much of the southern tier of Canadian provinces to the East Coast and down into the northeastern US. It's migration primarily takes it through areas east of the Mississippi River.

I took one group from my Palo Alto Baylands birding class to the outer Point Reyes on 10/2/04. While looking at a Blue-headed Vireo, we were told of a Canada Warbler that was also present a hundred yards or so to the south. While we watched the vireo, the Canada Warbler's foraging track led it back to where we were.

In this image, the tail appears very short, but that's because it was angled away from my point of view.

Note the even and complete eye-ring and the yellow wash in the supraloral area. The characteristic necklace is represented by a set of vague gray lines spanning its undersides from the throat onto the breast.

This "grabshot" of the bird in flight shows the proper length of the tail and the white undertail coverts. It also shows the pale underwing coverts and extent of yellow in the flanks.

Another Canada Warbler was found in San Mateo County near Princeton Harbor by Ron Thorn on 9/30/04. This may have been an indication a small movement of vagrants of this species through our area.
