Bird Photos: Studies: Another kind of "golden"
plover
You may have seen Bill Bousman's report on the
South Bay Birds list about another "golden" plover that
was seen on 9/26/03 at the New Chicago Marsh in Alviso CA. Dean
Manley, of recent Hudsonian Godwit 2003 fame, called us back out
to see this plover because we were looking for a recently found
Pacific Golden-Plover to compare with the uncertain
Golden-Plover. Here are a few images.

Bill Bousman, Dean Manley,
Jack Cole and I were studying this bird's features: extensive
golden flecking on mantle and scapulars, warmer wash in
the face, less contrasting supercillium, short wing extension...
yep, pretty good for a Pacific Golden-Plover, not like that
other confusing one. I diligently
kept snapping photos.
Then, the bird leaned forward and.... |

stretched its wings! Whoa!
Black axillaries, white rump... Suddenly, that bill didn't
look so delicate and thin. This is, apparently, a juvenile
Black-bellied Plover. I'm not sure how often one in this
bright plumage is seen locally. |
