The BirdNUTZ Checklist
I've prepared a checklist that covers most of the
birds you might expect to see in California. In order to make
a checklist that fits on two sides of a standard letter-sized
sheet, and to still have readable type, I've had to make some
choices about what to keep and what to leave out. The checklist
is not intended to be a complete list of all the birds seen in
California. I've excluded most southern desert species and other
species whose range barely includes parts of California. Some
regular vagrants are included and the rare ones are excluded.
The exclusions may seem arbitrary to your birding style. This
is the challenge of a "one-size-fits-all" solution.
The checklist is intended to be a useful tool for
field-use to reduce the amount of time that it might take you
to record a sighting for a trip. There are blanks at the end of
the checklist for that special rarity that you might have been
lucky enough to see.
To conserve paper, you should print or copy the
two pages back to back, orienting the top of each side to the
same edge. Then, using the dotted lines, fold the sheet in a zig-zag,
or accordion-fold, manner. This makes the whole checklist much
smaller while keeping all of the listed species quickly accessible.
You can even fold it in half, perpendicular to the other folds,
to slip it into a pocket.
I hope you find the checklist useful.
